Do you care about water? Do you want to learn how to think about water interdisciplinarily?

If so, apply to join the newly-launched Graduate Cluster on Water Security Graduate clusters are a way to add training on a particular topic to your ongoing PhD.

What You’ll Get:
Gain top-tier multidisciplinary training on water in the arts, sciences, law, and engineering, with opportunities for applied work and networking on water both locally and globally.

What’s Required:
Students will be required to take three three graduate courses related to water, and participating in two monthly Water Center seminars: the Watering Holes and Wildcats in Water

Wildcats in Water | NU Water Student Seminar

Wildcats in Water is a monthly student-led seminar series hosted by NU Water at Northwestern University. Designed to foster collaboration and community among students, faculty, and researchers working on water-related topics, the series features short “flash talks” that highlight ongoing research, innovative ideas, and interdisciplinary projects across campus. Each session centers on a unique theme — from sustainability to water technologies — creating a relaxed, inclusive space for knowledge sharing, networking, and discussion. Lunch is provided, making it a great opportunity to connect, learn, and get inspired by peers in the water research community.

Winter 2025 and Spring 2026 Internship Opportunity

Argonne National Laboratory, located in Chicago, IL, can host a student intern who will work with Dr. Meltem Urgun-Demirtas and Tim Fairley-Wax on cutting-edge waste-to-biofuel research for a startup company, Aquora Biosystems, embedded at Argonne National Laboratory. Work will focus on fermentation product separations and fermentation optimization

You must set up a meeting with intern sponsors by emailing Fairley-Wax @aquorabiosystems.com & demirtasmu@anl.gov with the subject line “Student Internship” In the email, please include your resume and one to two paragraphs that introduce yourself and discuss your interest in the internship. Please state when you would be able to start working and for how many hours per week.
